How To Avoid Leaking Gutters During Rainy Months

| 11 July 2016

Gutters collect water and move it away from your home’s foundation. When they become clogged, they don’t work properly and can cause leaks, especially during the rainy months. To avoid leaking gutters in the spring and fall (when it rains the most) it is important to perform routine maintenance. When not taken care of, leaky gutters can translate to cracks in your roof and cracks in your foundation. You can stop leaking gutters before they start. Here’s how:

Avoiding Gutter Leaks During Rainy Months

Take a walk

To find out if your gutters are clogged, take a walk around your house. Look at your gutters’ downspouts. If these are clogged, you’ll notice it right away. Clogged downspouts don’t allow water to pass through and result in buildup. Eventually this buildup gets heavy and causes your gutters to sag. On your gutter walk, look out for cracks or holes in the caulking. You can fill in these damaged areas yourself with silicone caulk. Be sure to clean them first and wait until they’re dry before applying new caulking.

Say bye-bye to gunk

If you have access to a ladder and a pair of gloves, you can clean your gutters yourself. Scoop out all the gunk that has accumulated in your gutters. Most of the gunk will be made of compostable items like sticks and leaves. Anything that isn’t can go right into the trash. Debris that gets stuck in your gutters will cause them to block and lead to leaks. Removing the gunk from your gutters a few times a year will save you from leaks during the rainy seasons. Also, be on the lookout for the spikes. These run across the gutter from the roof’s outside edge. They hold the gutters in place and also need to be cleared of gunk. If you notice a broken spike it will need to be replaced.

Do a deep clean

If you have access to a pressure washer (you can rent one if not), you can perform a gutter deep clean. Remember that pressure washers are very powerful and if you’ve never used one before, please follow the instructions that come with it, or hire a professional gutter specialist to deep clean your gutters for you twice yearly. A professional can also let you know if you need your gutters replaced.
